New South Writing Contest

Two prizes of $1,000 each and publication in New South are given annually for a poem and a story or essay. Submit up to three poems or up to 9,000 words of prose with a $15 entry fee (this already includes a one-year subscription to New South) by April 15. All entries are considered for publication.

Crab Orchard Review Literary Prizes

Three prizes of $2,000 each and publication in Crab Orchard Review are given annually to each winner in the magazine’s genre contests: Richard Peterson Poetry prize, Jack Dyer Fiction prize, and John Guyon Literary Nonfiction prize. Submit a poem of up to five pages, a short story of up to 6,000 words, or a literary nonfiction piece of up to 6,500 words by April 21. Don’t forget to include a $15 entry fee, which already includes a copy of the prize issue.

Nimrod International Journal Literary Awards

Two prizes of $2,000 each and publication in Nimrod International Journal of Prose and Poetry are given annually for works of poetry and short fiction. The winners also receive transportation and lodging to attend an awards ceremony and writing conference in Tulsa in October. The runner-up in each category receives $1,000 and publication in the magazine. U.S. writers may submit 3 to 10 pages of poetry or up to 7,500 words of fiction with a $20 entry fee, which includes a one-year subscription to Nimrod International Journal, by April 30. All entries are considered for publication.

Academy of American Poets James Laughlin Award

A prize of $5,000 is given annually for a second book of poetry by a living poet that will be published in the forthcoming year. The winner also receives an all-expenses-paid weeklong residency at the Betsy Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. Copies of the winning book are purchased and distributed to approximately 1,000 members of the Academy of American Poets.

Breakwater Review Fiction Contest

A prize of $1,000 and publication in Breakwater Review is given annually for a short story. Submit a story of up to 5,000 words with a $10 entry fee by May 15. All entries will be considered for publication.

Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition

A prize of $1,500 and publication in Cutthroat is given annually for an unpublished short story. Submit a story of up to 3,500 words by May 15. The entry fee is $15 before May 1, and $20 thereafter.
