Pocket-size astronomy field guide features northern deep-sky objects to Magnitude 10 for telescope and binocular observation. All known galaxies, clusters and nebulae were painstakingly culled from every major catalog, organized and cross-referenced for ease of use at the viewing site. Object-oriented maps include special symbols to aid in finding and identifying the objects, stars, double stars, and asterisms. Simple enough for the beginner yet detailed for the advanced.

The digest-sized, coil bound, fully updated OITHv4 features 697 deep-sky objects visible from the northern hemisphere, all with current hyparcos data. Those objects of mag 7 and brighter - affectionately termed "city" objects - are highlighted in the lists and in the 70 tightly drawn maps. Astronomical details are in "expanded shorthand" and set large for reading at night by flashlight and articles on equipment type, filters, magnification and right ascension and declination (RA/Dec) are included. Newly included are 152 double/multiple stars, 75 carbon stars and 73 dimmer objects to mag-10.5. Original constellation grouping stories provide a memorable way to see the bigger picture; the stories have proven helpful in teaching the sky to kids of all ages.

This multi-purpose guide is most convenient at the viewing site instead of larger, bulkier books and computers, or as a companion to the larger sky atlases when planning a night's viewing. It's compact size makes it ideal for camping, hiking or in the car.

Peter is an award-winning graphic designer with his own studio. Interest in astronomy began at an early age thanks to a loving father, the interest was heightened by witnessing the 1966 Leonid Meteor Shower and then seeing Jupiter for the first time through a friend's telescope. He regularly travels 100 miles to get out from under Chicago's light dome with an antique 6-inch reflector, tripod-mounted binoculars and adjustable viewing seat.

An active hang glider pilot since 1977, he has logged nearly 1000 flights, performed in numerous airshows and invented a device for the sport used by NASA on the X-38 Space Station Lifeboat.
