Scent of the River describes the events that led up to the removal of the Cherokee Indians to Oklahoma in 1838, and the one family that resisted removal.

Frederick E. Bryson is a native of the Southern Appalachian region that was once home to the Cherokee Nation. His interest in the politics and removal of the Cherokees in 1838 could be described as "environmental".
