I am not, at all, certain that we can hold a moment, For to do so, we must memorialize it, Placing it in yesterday, Losing its already ephemeral firstness, the freshness – Innocent beauty become matroned glory. We do not, truly, bargain with time; Anticipatory angst may placate the unconscious, As a kind of insurance, dear, But it is just as much a pirate, A highwayman, thievery in all guises, taking away quietly, Quickly and insidiously, lovely portions of the moment. With closing the screen, Among numerous moths in late night warmth – And catching the small, blinking stars of first fireflies, I realized that we are already in summer – Delightfully frightening. About the Book
Elizabeth's poetry is, in sum, a collection of worded pictures of her sparing with illness, sensitivities, in relationships and of being - jousting with philosophical principles as they impinge on her sensibilities and intuitiveness, within the milieu of Bipolar perception. The resulting dissonance within bountiful periods of joy in creating - she finds, to some degree, a contentment, perhaps resignation, but surely a "lighted despair" in what she has come to view as the "feast" of life, where she wishes to come to table, often and long.
About the Author
Clayton has published nine works (primarily poetry) since the release of her autobiography in 2007, which chronicles her struggles with Bipolar Disorder. In November, 2012, she was inducted into Copiah-Lincoln's Delta Chapter of Sigma Delta's Literary Hall of Fame, and nominated for the Eric Hoffner award by her publisher in early spring, 2013.
