We can’t experience total healing without forgiveness. We carry burdens and heaviness in our hearts when we are unable to forgive. We don’t realize the enormous burdens we carry when we hang onto unresolved hurt and pain. It keeps us in bondage. Not being able to forgive impairs our ability to move forward, have healthy relationships and to heal. The anger and bitterness weighs us down and affects our relationships in a negative way. It can cause repressed emotions and feelings hindering God from doing a complete healing work in us. There may be unresolved issues of shame, guilt, anger or unrealistic expectations others have had on us. It can be difficult forgiving someone who has hurt us deeply. We can feel anger and rage at them for the hurt and pain they’ve cause. Anger and rage towards another person that has caused us hurt and pain can surface when we are reminded of it or certain circumstances trigger those feelings or emotions. It is difficult to let go and forgive, but if we don’t we can remain angry and bitter, hardening our hearts. We give power to the enemy when we hold onto heartache and pain because he will use our hardened hearts to inflict pain and hurt onto others. If our hearts are hard, we lack compassion and sensitivity towards another and it can blind us to another’s needs. God can soften our hearts and do His healing work in us. Hurt can cause us to hold onto anger and resentments. Letting go of the hurt helps us to be able to forgive, setting us free from what holds us back from truly loving and living our lives. It’s a process that can take time, but when we are willing to be open to God and allow Him to work in us, it changes us. We can ask God to help us to let go of the hurt and pain if we’re not able to. We can’t try to force ourselves to forgive or rush through the process of being able to forgive. It takes time as we sort out our feelings and emotions, working through our hurt and anger or feelings of betrayal. There can be no true forgiveness from the heart if we haven’t let go or worked through our feelings.
