About the Book

How does a man measure his success these days?

Is it the size of his bank account, or the size of his girth, that really matters? It's a sad but true fact that middle-aged men in North America tend to know more about their automobiles than they do about their own bodies.

Now here's a maintenance and repair manual for a man's body that anybody can follow... advice on nutrition, fitness, health and well- being for men of the baby boom generation; men for whom growing into the shape of their own father's body, as they approach 50 years of age, is something they'd just as soon avoid if possible.

It is possible, and it's easier than one might think. Read this book and learn how to develop and maintain a fitter, stronger, healthier lifestyle that will ensure a better quality of life for the long haul ahead.

excerpt from Introduction

This book contains a lot of information pertaining to health, fitness and the well- being in general of men like you and I. Middle- aged men, that is.

Some of what's written here deals with the science of nutrition, while other areas delve into the specifics of muscle building and body shaping. There is far too much for anyone to learn in one lifetime in any one of these areas, but take from it what you can, add to it what you already know, and from it all become someone and something greater than you already are.

What this book is really about is choices. As if we aren't faced with enough choices throughout our lives, here we are faced with the task of choosing between the road well- travelled and the road seldom taken. By this, I mean you can make the choice of millions of North American men to sit on the couch and stuff yourself with unwholesome food, watch television until your mind is numb and perhaps consider walking to and from your automobile as your daily exercise.

The other choice is to break free from the decadent, easy life and instead take a path that will make you lean, hard, keen and strong - sound of body, sound of mind.

The first choice requires that you likely do nothing you aren't currently doing. The latter will require of you a commitment to yourself. That choice is to eat nutritious food, drink pure water, to work at improving your muscle mass and to preserving your bone density.

The rewards for choosing this way of life include a better, healthier, younger, more sexy body than you might have had at any time previously. It also means a new lease on life - a better quality of living for what could amount to a much longer period of time - perhaps as long as 100 years or more.

There is no guarantee you'll live longer as a result of reading this book or by faithfully following the advice it contains. Alas, a long life is not the natural consequence of eating properly and exercising vigorously. There are too many variables and life tends to be unpredictable, even if we do follow all the rules and try to keep our noses out of trouble. Accidents happen and people are sometimes struck down in the prime of life for no other reason than that they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

So are you the kind of man this book is targeting? To find out if you might be, read these next few questions and take an objective look at the person in the mirror:

If you are now at mid- life or beyond, how do you measure your success?

A huge bank account? A senior position with a major corporation? A beautiful house? Cars, boats and a lengthy assortment of toys?

But when you look at yourself in the mirror, whom do you see? Does it still look like that wiry, handsome kid who graduated high school or do you see a paunchy, balding, overweight, overstressed middle- aged man?

No matter how much money you make in this life, no matter how many cars you will own, houses you can purchase or dream vacations you can afford, the simple fact is you only get one body. What's more, if you've invested your life in the pursuit of financial wealth - at the expense of your health and fitness - you have missed the boat.

If you aren't now and have never been taking care of yourself - body, mind and spirit - you needn't bother investing dutifully in retirement saving programs. You may as well spend that money pre- paying your funeral arrangements and devote the time shopping for a funeral plot. You are far more likely to need these services than you are likely to require a vast amount of money for a retirement lifestyle because that is going to be a lot shorter and a lot less fulfilling than you ever imagined.

Regardless of how much material wealth you accumulate, what good is it if you haven't got your health? How can you enjoy the best years of your life if you haven't got the energy to get off the couch, the muscle coordination to walk without the aid of a cane? What fun can the outdoors possibly be if you haven't the physical capability to exert yourself once in a while without worrying that you may suffer a heart attack?

On the other hand, if by the time you reach 50 years of age and you still have the physique of a 20- year old, then you have truly accomplished something. Consider yourself a truly wealthy person.

So what age is your body right now and we aren't talking about chronological age. How's your eyesight ? What do your biceps look like? How are those triceps? What does your belly look like? Can you still see your feet when you look down?

If you look like the average North American man, the thought of looking objectively at your own body probably makes you wince. So, take comfort in the fact that it's not too late to turn things around - provided you are willing to make the commitment.

Bad habits and gravity may have done a number on your body, but by making some lifestyle changes, it can be redeemed - inside and out. You can rebuild it so it is healthy, robust, strong and lean. This is not fantasy, this is not about cosmetic surgery or implants or anything artificial. This is not only possible, it can actually be achieved in a shorter time than you might have thought.

This book is not about instant cures, but it is definitely a miracle cure if you stay with it and make it part of your lifestyle. Wouldn't you rather spend your 75th birthday or even your 100th birthday rollerblading to the gym for a workout instead of shuffling down to the nursing station in the rest home?

The fact is, if you are like the average middle- aged man in North America, you indulge in too much overprocessed or fast food, too much sugar and simple carbohydrate, too much alcohol, too much fat- laden food, too much snack food and too much of too many other body- killing compounds. There is also likely too much stress in your daily life and you probably know little, if anything, about how to deal affectively with it.

And overeating isn't the only culprit. For most adults, inactivity is as much to blame for being overweight. In fact, inactivity often leads to overeating and a craving for high-carbohydrate, high-fat foods containing little or no nutritional value.

The irony of being alive in these times is that the age of communication has never been easier or more accessible. People can be in touch with anyone at any time from almost any location. At the same time, people have become almost completely out of touch with their bodies - they don't know anything about what makes them tick. They simply don't know what they need to nurture and nourish them from the inside out.

If you are one of these individuals, then right now is the time to start making the necessary changes in your life. It's time to live better - healthier, smarter and fitter.
