Excerpts
Sunday morning in the deep south meant one thing. "Get up and go to church". No exceptions! Momma, who couldn't drive, believed to make it to heaven one must be in the house of God.
Getting up and looking out the kitchen window to see if Daddy had come home, only to find no car. He had stayed out another Saturday night. A sigh of relief that he hadn't come home. At least we got enough sleep, something rare when he came in drunk only to fight with Momma. He would remind us that we were only happenings, anyway.
"Get on your clothes!" cried Momma, as my two brothers were washing dishes. We will walk to church, which would only take about twenty minutes. We were each given a quarter to be placed in the offering plate as it was passed during the preaching hour. "Do not keep this money." we were warned. "God will reward you 10, maybe 100 fold." said Momma.
As we walked, some of the other church members would drive pass, blow the horn, but never stop. Who could blame them for not stopping. After all, there was Mother, my older sister, four brothers, and myself. Most families, having several children, certainly didn't have room for us.
As we entered the church yard we could see the deacons as they stood outside the church. Shaking hands with all as they entered the sanctuary. Over to one side, two deacons were putting out their cigarettes. No smoking inside, for sure.
"Momma, we aren't supposed to smoke cigarettes are we?" I asked. "No!" She replied, "Be quiet, no talking in church."
As we left church, we were more than humbled by the preachers message. No one had walked the isle today but we all had heard a great message titled "The Gates of Hell". I wish the preacher would talk more about Heaven and less about Hell. After all, we had all the Hell we ever wanted when Daddy came home drunk.
