About the Book
In his frank autobiography, the author related how he went from a difficult childhood to a science career that moved through three countries on two continents. He worked in three sectors, academe, government and the private sector. Starting with a simple pond net as a schoolboy, his research extended to high seas research ships and deep-sea submersibles, and from working as a lone biologist to senior management positions.
The author describes his education, career, research history and worldwide travels. In each chapter, he explores the costs and benefits of the various experiences. The last chapter provides an insight into into his political and religious views that resulted from such a diverse career.
He also includes selected poetry writings, a complete list of his graduate students and research associates, and provides a complete bibliography of his published books and extensive research papers in scientific journals.

Ralph Brinkhurst was born in Croyden, Surrey, England in 1933. He spent his early boyhood in Morden, south of London, during the Second World War, where he was witness to air raids, rationing, and most adults in uniform. He was educated at Hillcross School and The Rutlish School for Boys before moving to St. Albans, Hertfordshire, where he attended St Abans County Grammar school, also all male.
There he played rugby, took part in plays and started a lifelong interest in aquatic biology. With a national scholarship, he attended King's college, London, where he obtained a Bachelor's degree, and a Ph. D for his work on water striders (Heteroptera) and their wing polymorphism. He eventually earned a D. Sc for his work on aquatic Oligochaeta (sludge worms), which occupied him as a sideline to his employment responsibilities.
Dr. Brinkhurst first worked for the University of Liverpool with his mentor, Dr. H.B. N. Hynes and became involved in environmental issues. He then immigrated to Canada to attend the University of Toronto, Canada, in 1966 where he taught invertebrate zoology and marine ecology.
He was a founding member of an activist group, Pollution Probe, which became invovled in political activities and much work with the media. He then joined the Government of Canada, first as a Director of the St. Andrews, New Brunswick, fishery research labratory, and then as the founder of the Marine Ecology Laboratory at the Institute of Ocean Sciences in British Columbia.
He moved to Tennessee to found the Aquatic Resources Center, a non-profit consulting agency.
He has been affiliated with a number of research organizations and universities, such as the Royal Ontario Museum, The Woods Hole Biological Laboratory, University of Victoria, Royal Roads Military College, the University of Memphis, Tennessee Technological University and others.
His work with Oligochaete worms led to a great deal of interaction with scientists world wide, and travel to most continents. He provided identification manuals for many countries, and pioneered ecological work with these worms. He initiated a series of international conferences on aquatic Oligachaete biology that meet triennially and has led to much cooperation world wide. Dr. Brinkhurst began his career in small ponds, moved to the St. Lawrence Great lakes, then to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. He went from dip nets to deep sea submersibles. Since retiring he has become an avid birdwatcher.
