1 Genesis Nov 1, 2004 Dear Grandchildren, This is The Feast of All Saints, November 1, so this is a perfect day to write to you about how you are a part of God’s beautiful creation. There are two Creation stories in the Bible, and many other creation stories told by other religions and cultures, all of them trying to explain how we appeared on Earth, or how on Earth we could have appeared on our own! (A little humor here; you are permitted to laugh.) The Bible Creation story we all know very well is about Eve and the apple. Eve was tempted by a snake, and in the very early days of humans, the snake was a sacred symbol especially for women. Anyway, when God asked Adam why he was eating the apple, he replied, “Eve made me do it!” Now, how many of you would be able to get out of a tight spot with your mom or dad by saying “Joe made me do it,” or “Patricia made me do it.” How many of you could get away with that? I don’t think so. This story of Creation may not have happened in this exact way but it certainly contains truth. How many times have we followed someone else’s idea—like raiding the cookie jar—and then didn’t want to take the blame for doing it when Mom finds out? For more of this story, see the Bible, Genesis, chapter 2. In Genesis, chapter 1, another Creation story tells us that we are wonderfully made in God’s image. God made heaven and earth; sun and moon; water and sky; and God saw that all of it was good. Besides that, God created every kind of plant and seed-bearing fruit trees, fish, birds, animals and creeping creatures and saw that it was good. And in God’s image, God created man and woman and saw that it was very good. God blessed man and woman and left ALL the fruits to be food for them. Of course, there is more to this story, and I am not sure whether God created in this order or what one day meant in God-time. But I can tell you that we were created as beautiful and forever loved by the Divine Spirit whose dreams enfold us with endless possibilities. See Genesis, chapter 1 in the bible. So today, you can celebrate your uniqueness (you NEEK ness; it means no other person is like you) your talents and gifts, the way you see nature, and the way you recognize that you are loved and blessed by God. About the Book
While raising a family, Elaine Mayer became an expert in multi-tasking, her most important work now is enjoying family. Letters to Grandchildren is a delightful collection of letters about the mystery, magic and adventure of life that were written for her Grandchildren. The letters encourage them to see how their lives are shaped by people and nature, and to awaken them to the natural world and the doorways that connect them to the Spiritual realm. We all are a part of holy creation, integral with Earth, because without her flora and fauna we cannot live.
Many of these letters return to the First Scripture and to Nature, where our senses search out Holy Wisdom. We all are Grandchildren who are touched by the Source of Love when we see Earth’s goodness, smell the pungency of creation, feel the breath of the Spirit, taste life in its diversity, and hear the music of the universe.
About the Author
While raising a family of eight children, Elaine Mayer became an expert in multitasking, so with her husband Joe’s encouragement she organized and managed a bookstore, then taught music and social studies at a school, and later took a position at Mayo Clinic library. Her most important work now is enjoying family.
