The Day I Was Invisible

I don't remember if I was nine or ten, but I remember everything else as if it happened yesterday. It was the day I was invisible. I opened my eyes that morning to the sound of my friend John, calling my name. So I got out of bed, got dressed, and left my room. In the hallway I saw my Mom, but she walked right past me. She looked in my room and I heard her say "I wonder where Kevin is." I thought she was playing a game with me, so I walked up to her and smiled. Still nothing. Then I tapped her on the shoulder. She scratched the spot right where I tapped her, but she never seemed to know I was there. So I went downstairs and had a bowl of cereal. After breakfast, I went into the bathroom to brush my teeth before going out. I put my toothpaste on the brush, and did my best job brushing After I wiped my mouth, I looked into the mirror, but I didn't see me looking back. I rubbed my eyes and looked again. Still nothing. I put the towel back on the rack. I went outside and saw John sitting on the curb waiting for me. I sat next to him but he didn't say anything. I flicked his ear, and all he did was swipe his arm past his head, as if he was swatting at a fly. I stood right in front of him, and with my thumbs in my ears and my tongue out, I gave him the best raspberries I had ever given anyone. Still nothing. I realized now this was not going to be an ordinary day. I went back in the house for an ice cream cone. I'm usually not allowed to eat ice cream in the morning, but today was no ordinary day. So I helped myself to a cone of vanilla ice cream, my favorite.
