About the Author

The author, born in 1950 in India, has parents who have immense love, wisdom and faith but minimal formal education. They brought the family to Glasgow, Scotland, at great emotional cost, for “a better life”. Their dream was that at least one of their children becomes a doctor. Arriving in Glasgow at the age of five years, the author knew no English. The linguistic abyss at school was bridged by the support of his parents and teachers. He benefited from a Scottish education, one of the best in the world at the time. In 1974, he graduated with a medical degree from University of Glasgow, with certificates of merit. Thus his parents dream was fulfilled, and even more so later when one of his younger brothers and a nephew followed suit in medicine. Life poses challenges; it’s how you deal with them that matters. The author’s cultural challenges continued on emigration to Canada in 1975; like his parents, he was seeking a “better life”. He practiced in rural Ontario before settling in Richmond, BC. He became interested in psychiatry while working at Riverview Hospital where he also served as President of Medical Staff. In 1995, he obtained a psychiatric degree at the University of British Columbia. His professional interests include cognitive therapy, and group therapy, and the interface of psychiatry and spirituality. His personal interests include yoga, photography, poetry, and spiritual discourses. His spiritual blog is at www. jasbhopal.com. He has two children, both in the discipline of medicine.
