About the Book

NOT ALL LUCK IS BAD follows the ups and downs of the Stringer family from 1895 to 1913. Jane Stringer, dominant mother of three: Sarah - beautiful but empty headed, Laura -plain, serious, and Georgie - physically frail.

They live in Stratford, east London. Jane's widowed mother, Matilda, runs a successful dress business. She'd planned marriage for Jane to eligible Oliver Steadman. But Jane falls in love with George Stringer, a market porter. George often out of work, Sarah is left with Matilda, she lives the comfortable life. Laura takes care of Georgie. Londoners celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee except the Stringers. Bailiffs put them in the workhouse. When Matilda dies, Jane realises how little she knew her. She 'disappears' and reappears in Brighton as the elegant Mrs Ellen Stapleton-Clarke, dazzling the Brighton set and for a while lives the life Matila had wanted to her.
