About the Book

I have written Diabetes / My Life with emotions from the deepest recesses of my heart, and have shared my innermost feelings and fears of being an insulin dependent diabetic for over half of my life.

I would be foolish to try and tell you that I am not afraid of this disease, because I am.

Every little ache, pain, twitch or strange feelings makes me wonder what is happening now?? Where wil this lead me, and what can, and will, I be able to do about it.

While there still is no cure for this chronic illness, I sincerely hope that you, or your loved ones, can learn and benefit from my experiences.

There is an abundance of material available that has been written by physicians, educators, dieticians, etc...But, there is nothing to compare with the personal side of this chronic illness....as can be written by someone who has walked along the same path that you are headed down...

Diabetes / My Life - Patient's Perspective

About the Author

Martha was diagnosed with Type I diabetes - at the age of 23 - Just when her dream of an Air Force career was becoming a reality - Just when she was "finding her place in life" - Just when she was inquisitive enough to learn about Diabetes, and use this knowledge to help her face the day to day adversities of living with this chronic illness.

She was born in Philidelphia, Mississippi and has lived in this Southern state for 41 of her 50 years. Her short lived Air Force career gave her an opportunity to live in Texas and Illinois. She and her husband lived in Nashville, TN for several years before returning to her roots, in Mississippi, when her youngest brother developed serious health problems. Six months after their return home, Jerry died from kidney failure due to Type II diabetes.

The author was forced to take early retirement due to her health problems, and has devoted her life to diabetes awareness, and using her personal experiences to help educate the public about this "killer" disease and its complications.

In addition to promoting diabetes awareness, she is an active member, and supporter, of the Gastroparesis and Dysmotilities Associate (www.gpda.net) GPDA is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to finding answers, increasing awareness, and supporting research on gastroparesis and related gastrointestinal motility disorders.

B.T. and Martha have been married for 22 years, and now reside in Brandon, Mississippi.
