About the Book
Frank Comfort is one of the Buffalo Homicide Squad's best detectives. During his ten-year career he has solved every case assigned to him except one - the murder of his wife Zoe on her twenty-eighth birthday. Comfort's guilt over her death and memories of a past conviction gone wrong in the witness protection program haunt him daily. To deal with the resultant emotional stress, he dulls his feelings with alcohol, a problem that ultimately brings him to the brink of disaster six years after Zoe's death, when a serial killer emerges from the streets of Buffalo.
Through painstaking investigation by him and his partner of many years, David Chadwick, Comfort deduces the crimes are connected to Zoe's death. The perpetrator murders women on their twenty-eighth birthday, torments Comfort by leaving personal messages on his answering machine, and tapes notes with cryptic clues to his victims' mirrors, a cruel irony for the detective, who spent his youth obsessed with staring at his mirror image.
With the anniversary of Zoe's death and birthday approaching, Comfort follows the killer's trail, fraught with twists and turns and personal demons he is not ready to face. He and Chadwick use every means at their disposal to book the killer before it's too late for other young women and for Comfort's own tenuous grip on reality as he fights to gain closure over the loss of his wife.
