About the Book

A book of poetic works about a wide range of subjects, including:

SEPTEMBER MORNING… In September's mornings by the river
peace, joy and beauty all are found
the raindrops on the tree leaves glisten
at this place where nature's gifts abound…

BIRDS OF WINTER… After an impatient wait since November
our feathered friends have come back once more
to feast on the seeds in our hanging bird feeder
as they have so often done before…

SANTA'S HAPPY PLACE… Once more there is this special place
at a shopping mall called Aberdeen
where Santa brings a special glow
to young and old and in between…

REMEMBERANCE DAY… The guns have never really fallen silent
and bombs have never ceased to fall
while wars still take their deadly toll
and cloak the earth with death's grey pall…

About the Author

Douglas Daws was born in the small town of Grantham, in Lincolnshire, England, on the 30th of August 1920. The Daws family were however, all from the South London area. Shortly after his birth, he moved to Lewisham, in London, closer to the extended Daws family. There were further family moves as he grew older, which resulted in schooling in Lincoln and Cambridge.

In June of 1940, his education was interrupted, as he and many of his fellow students, responded to the call for volunteers, and enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, where he served in various parts of the world, until his discharge in December 1946, the same month he and his wife Margaret, sailed on the Queen Elizabeth 2, for a new life in Canada, in Kamloops, B. C. He had spent some time in Canada, at Medicine Hat, Alberta, at 34 Service Flying Training School during World War 2. It was in Medicine Hat, that he married his wife, a marriage that lasted for 59 years, until the passing of his wife in 2002. He and his second wife, who was also Margaret married in 2004, and still reside in Kamloops, where he had successful careers, in the Department of National Defence, and with the City of Kamloops, as Parks Manager, until his retirement in 1982.
