About the Book

Sober For The Health Of It is a self-help/recovery book which examines the disease of alcoholism. This book addresses the total person: mental, physical and emotional. It highlights biochemical rebalancing through proper nutrition, versus pharmacology and hospital diets.

It shows the development and delivery of services rendered to alcoholics and focuses on nutritional education for the treatment of alcoholism.

Within the pages of this book are reports compiled on the authors' personal experience with alcoholics, reports cited by the medical profession, interviews with former inmates of New York correctional facilities and long-time members of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The book contains information for teens by teens, special problems to women, schizophrenia and alcohol, and alcohol abuse among the elderly.

Included is a chapter entitled, "The Road Back - A whole foods approach." Sober For The Health Of It contains guidelines for The Optimal Nutritional Program, an extensive look at vitamins and minerals, the historical uses of herbs and finally, "Can Alcoholism Be Prevented."

After compiling all of this information, the author felt justified to use the techniques described within the pages because all other programs had approached the alcoholic as either having a physical and/or mental problem and never took into consideration that they are the sum total of all their parts.

About the Author

Although in her seventies, Pauline Gray is a radiant woman who seems to pulsate with great energy.

Her introduction to a holistic modality began in 1965 when she enrolled in a series of Hatha Yoga classes with Richard Hittleman. This encounter with wellness caused her interest to grow in leaps and bounds.

From 1972 until her retirement in April 2000, she practiced holistically. During those twenty eight years, she received her degree in nutrition and certification in nutritional consulting from the American Association of Nutritional Consultants. She studied herbology with Dr. John Christopher, became a certified and registered foot reflexolgist (practicing the original Ingham method). Gray studied iridology with the man who pioneered it in the U.S. - Dr. Bernard Jensen and received her D.Sc. degree in Pastoral Psychology.

All who have known Dr. Gray agree, "She is a true care giver in every sense of the word, and her talent and ambition seems limitless."

In 1985 Pauline received a nutritional science award in recognition of Distinguished Achievement in Natural Nutrition.

She designed and authored a Comprehensive Iridology/Herbology course which was approved in 1992 by the New York State Nurses Association for continuing credits. This course was taught to nurses and chiropractors in the states of Florida, Georgia and New York.

December 1993 Gray received her license from the Pastoral Care Licensing Commission.

In late 1994 Pauline was given the Sister Mary Thomas award in recognition of the many hours donated to the church as a pastoral counselor for the lay community and clergy.

Throughout the years, she has worked diligently and been a role model for her belief, "Neither science nor adjunct natural therapies says it all. We each need to be forthright about out limitations. It's time we emerged from our respective corners to work in tandem towards wholeness."
