“Well,” Bob drawled, “Paula, now that our children are gone and doing well on their own, it leaves only you and me. We got to start thinking about ourselves. You know how hard it is for me to hire help to plow our farm, and I can’t do it alone. It’s too big for one man, and none of our children will ever go back to farming.” “Now, Bob, I want you to come out with it; tell me what’s on your mind.” Bob, keeping his eyes on the road, took a puff on his pipe and said, “Paula, I have been offered a good sum of money for our farm by Mr. Peck, the cattle buyer from Chicago, and you know that dream I always had about those big mountains west of here, with a small home on a fi ve-acre spread where you and I can live out our lives in peace and contentment. It’s something my father always wanted to do, but he was too old before he got the chance.” “What!” Paula cried, “Are you telling me you want to sell our home and leave our children and grandson to live in some wilderness away from civilization among savage Indians? You better get it through your head right now, Bob Samron; I have no intentions of leaving my home.” Bob did not say a word, just puffed on his pipe and drove the rest of the way in silence. This was the end of Bob Samron’s dream of going to Oregon, but only for the present.

About the Author
George J. Sabol was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1914. He served in the US Navy during World War II and worked for Sunshine Biscuits for thirty-four years before retiring with his wife to Freehold, New Jersey. He died on February 13, 2011, at the age of ninety-six; he is survived by two daughters, a grandson, and two great-grandchildren.
