Reed felt sad and disappointed. She could see it had gotten late. Just a few kids remained walking home from school. She had a long walk yet. Her Mama, Amberella, would be looking for her. Reed went a little further. She thought she saw a shortcut and decicded to try it. It started getting darker as she walked down the narrow twisting street. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all she thought. Her heartbeat quickened and her stomach fluttered. A trash can fell over making a loud crash just as Reed turned around to go back. A mean looking mongrel dog jumped out at her. With hair raised and teeth bared, the dirty dog snarled at her, "What are you doing here, cutie? Want me and my friends to show you around the neighborhood?" Two more big, rough looking dogs appeared. Reed started to tremble. Under her fur, all the color drained from her skin. She thought her head would explode as she tried to think what to do. Run. Go back to the library for help. Reed turned and ran with all her might zigging and zagging up the uneven street. "Help, help," she howled, but could anyone hear her?

About the Book

About the Author
Rosemarie Kaupp, a lifelong dog lover, was the owner of Amber, the inspiration for Amberella. She writes with humor from her unique perspective of many years’ experience with children as a school nurse. She lives in southeastern Pennsylvania where she has written and spoken on child education and bereavement advocacy issues.
