The book provides details for the efficient design and construction of a mid-rise multi-storey office block using the 5-level Head Office of the Jackson Educational Complex as a Case Study. The Jackson Educational Complex, which runs the Jackson College of Education as the First Private College of Education through Distance Learning in Ghana, was founded by Professor & Mrs E.A. Jackson after they had retired from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). An Architect familiar with the use of modern technology was consulted to design a suitable Head Office building for the Institution. The co-author of this book, Dr Edward Botchway, lecturing at KNUST and known to the Jacksons, was given that challenge. The Administration Block of the College was to be built on a small piece of land at Ayeduase near KNUST and the team had to design the edifice to satisfy the stringent National Accreditation Board’s Physical Facilities Criteria (PFC). The end product, based on our brief culminated in a five-level mid-rise multi-storey office building with a basement. The book showcases the construction details employed for the project. It starts with the concepts and ends with several details of the building including landscaping and external works. At every stage of the construction period, architecture students were brought to the site to study and gain practical knowledge of project under construction. The choice of colours for the painting, the tiles, the furniture, the security, telecommunication systems amongst others all added up to make the building an attractive one and it stands out in the neighbourhood. This Foreword is written to encourage everyone in the building profession to get a copy. The construction details will in this book alone replace a number of other books you will have to sift through to get the same information.

About the Book
Ghana, a West African developing country, having attained a low middle-income status (November 2010), is currently embarking on a massive economic and physical infrastructure development with the discovery of oil. In this regard, the nation is witnessing a steady increase in the construction of high-rise buildings across the country, especially in the capital city of Accra and in most regional capitals. The fast-changing skyline provides enormous opportunities for young and active professional designers and builders to give expression to architecture in Ghana. Ghana attained independence in 1957 with a name change from Gold Coast, christened by the British colonial masters. From the precolonial era and independence up until the end of the twentieth century, most of the public and private buildings constructed in the country and particularly in cities were mainly two stories in massing. The twenty-first century has been inundated with new technologies and the manufacture of new materials for the construction industry, and this has led to an upsurge of the development of high-rise, multistory buildings. All building professionals and students undertaking design and construction of multistory buildings have tons of details to sift through. This book provides a cross section of contemporary case study on construction details, which can be employed in the development of multilevel, midrise projects. This case study project is on the administration block of the Jackson College of Education in Kumasi, which is a five-level, midrise, multistory building with a basement, designed and supervised by the Projekt David Foundation. This project was constructed from May 2012 through August 2014 by a local contractor, Ankomadu Construction Ltd., and was funded mainly with the internally generated funds (IGF) of the Jackson Educational Complex.
About the Author
Dr. Edward Ayebeng Botchway is a Registered Ghanaian Architect with over twenty years of active professional experience and a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Architecture of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Information and Communications Technology Management for Projects. In the building Industry, he has undertaken a number of mixed-use mid-rise development projects for both corporate and private clients with compelling results in terms of optimization of resources and efficient project delivery. He is currently the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the PROJEKT DAVID FOUNDATION. Edward has an excellent background in Finance and Construction Project Management. His areas of specialization and teaching are in Multi-storey Construction Development, Industrial Building Design and the Integration of Technology in Sustainable Environments. Dr. Edward Botchway believes that the teaching and practice of Architecture must first recognize the existence of form and function as set out by God in the creation of man’s first built environment, and as such, every provision of excellent shelter thereafter must strive to create harmony with this origin. Dr. Titus Ebenezer Kwofie is a chartered architect by profession and a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. Dr. Kwofie, holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural Design and a Professional Postgraduate Diploma degree in Architecture from KNUST. He has a Master of Philosophy in Housing Studies also from the same university in Kumasi, Ghana. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Construction Management with focus on improving Mass Housing delivery and management in 2015in the Department of Building Technology. Dr. Kwofie then joined the Department of Architecture after serving as the Director of Works at the Koforidua Technical University. He majors in housing design, construction project and procurement management for his research and practice. He shares additional research interest in construction technology, housing and managerial effectiveness. This has culminated into various research outputs that have been published in high impact journals and presentations at indexed conferences. He also serves as a regular reviewer for Emerald, ASCE, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis and built environment journals.
