About the Book

As a recovering alcoholic and "born again" Christian, Martha Browning, a middle-aged, middle class housewife from Indiana, wanted to visit Israel and the "Holy Lands" to strengthen her faith. She found however that her fascination with the cultural complexity and physical enchantment of the region soon overwhelmed her rather mundane curiosity related to the various religious sites and biblical stories. After befriending an Arab-Israeli doctor Martha was able to explore many intriguing aspects of Israel and the Middle East more thoroughly. What she saw and learned was beyond anything she could have imagined, and it forced her to examine her life's direction with a new passion and understanding. Just as she contemplated how to adjust her life, and how to manage the growing romantic feelings towards the doctor, she was kidnapped. Dealing with the terror of becoming a kidnap victim forced Martha to scrutinize her life, her faith, and her internal strengths and frailties with an urgency imposed by a frightening aloneness.

About the Author

Regarding qualification to write a book, I would suspect any one who can read and write is qualified to write a book--and I can read and write. Beyond that, I have one book already published with AuthorHouse ("Reclothing the Emperor"), and I have spent much of my career writing articles and technical reports, and a few editorial pieces, as well as poetry. I am a retired Professional Engineer (environmenal), with a BS in Zoology and a Masters in Engineering. I am an advocate for sustainable social practices, which include proper care and management of our environmental resources. My career was directed towards developing biologically based water treatment systems specifically designed to remove and recovery nutrients from eutrophic surface waters. I hold several patents related to this work. I am a native Floridian who enjoys fishing, kayaking, gardening targeted at the cultivation of native plants, hiking, tennis, and of course writing. I am married. I have two children--both boys, one 42 and one 30. I have two grandchildren--also boys--age 15 and 3. I am a graduate of the University of Florida (1971 BS), and the University of Central Florida (1976 MSES). My wife is CEO of a camp in Florida (Camp Boggy Creek) which services at no cost the needs of seriously ill children. The camp is one within the family of camps (now called Serious Fun Camps) started by Paul Newman. I am an amatuer physical anthroplogist as well, and am particularly interested in the possiblility of reconciliation between science and religion. It is this matter that inspires my writing.
