About the Book

The Odyssey of the Western Spirit traces the development of consciousness and then self-consciousness from its earliest beginnings in primitive life to its complex manifestation in our own times. The central focus is to describe the tremendous power that is thinking as that thinking has gone about the task of building the world in which we live. Three fundamental questions structure this presentation. First of all, what is the general condition for the possibility of human existence? Or, what is the essential common denominator that makes us all human, regardless of time, place, and circumstance? Secondly, what are the specific conditions for the possibility of human existence in the Western world? Or, what is the specific difference that defines the West as it has become the most powerful cultural formation in history? Thirdly, where do we go from here? Or, with the end of the Cold War, what opportunities present themselves that could put the world onto the high road of prosperity and goodwill? The Odyssey is a philosophical and historical account that places into unique perspective the threshold upon which the world now stands and concludes with a proposal for a new political party that would stand at the Center.
