It was recess time for the Second grade class. All of the students were excited to get outside and enjoy the beautiful day. Four Second grade boys were playing a basketball game of 2 on 2. Jason chose the teams as he always did. Everyone knew that Jason was the ‘king of the basketball court.’ Around the playground, children were scattered on the swings, climbing on the monkey bars, or sitting and watching their classmates play. Ben walked over to Jason and the others playing basketball. “Hey guys,” called Ben. “Can I join play?” “Yes,” answered Jason. “You’re good at basketball. You can join the other team.” Ben smiled widely and happily joined the game. A few minutes later, Zack walked up to Jason on the basketball court. “Hey, can I play too?” asked Zack. “I’ll be your third guy—then you’ll have an even game!” Jason stopped playing and looked Zack up and down. “Sorry Zack,” said Jason. “You’re really not that good at basketball. We’re better off playing without you.” Zack looked down at the ground and walked away quickly, feeling discouraged and embarrassed.

About the Author
Elissa Ciment graduated from Barnard College and then received an MPH specializing in epidemiology and biostatistics from the Boston University School of Public Health. Her work has appeared in various epidemiological publications as well as in Sportswear International, a global fashion magazine. Elissa lives in South Florida, where she is a busy wife, mom, and volunteer advocate for child literacy. Reena Rabovsky received her MSEd in school psychology from Queens College in New York. As a school psychologist, her goal is to facilitate students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth. She especially enjoys collaborating with students, parents, community members, and school staff to create a positive learning environment. Reena is delighted to support the social and emotional learning in Miami Beach, Florida, where she works as a school psychologist. She loves spending time with her husband and three children.
