"During the night we would hear screams, then shots from our wounded that we left behind. Minutes later more screams, then more shots. We did not want to give away our positions. For me, and I suspect for all that survived that day and night of fire fighting, bayonet charging, bomb dropping, then trying to get back to our wounded, none was as haunting as it is today - the long night of occasional interruptions of screams and then shots. We knew our men left behind in the heat of battle were being executed by the Viet Cong."

About the Author

As an Airborne/Ranger, LRRP, Jungle Expert Fighter, Pathfinder, and Raider Commando the author feels very lucky to received the training that was available. After training on Okinawa and in Taiwan in jungle fighting techniques and with the "Nationalist Chinese Guerillas of Taiwan" as well as the 1st Special Forces Group on Okinawa, and the 503rd Infantry-173rd Airborne on Okinawa Choquette found that his training had much to do with his survival in Vietnam.

"Sixty-two others - friends, comrades who were with me - did not survive. Perhaps my life was spared in order to tell their story. May God forgive me for my short comings."
