About the Book

Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant Michael Kelly runs primarily to keep in shape and competes only within the Marine Corps. His Sergeant Major devises a plan for "Gunny" to run, and win the New York City Marathon as a publicity and recruitment tool.

Gunny's training begins one year in advance with a professional trainer and the cooperation of the base commander. This is a team effort and there are other Marine participants that will enter the race for the sole purpose of supporting Sergeant Kelly. Each participant is given a specific purpose and function described in detail.

After a year of difficult training, the participants arrive in New York City a few days before the race. The details of their experiences and the final preparation are unique and humorous.

An unexpected event during the race has a tremendous impact on all the participants, spectators, the Commandant of the Marine Corps, the President of the United States and the hearts of all.

A must read for any former Marine, long distance runner or romantic.
