Aeronautical Dictionary with Emphasis on A.T.C. Communication Terms

About the Book

This dictionary, with its particular emphasis on A.T.C. Communications, is geared to all pilots, students, foreign speaking pilots or airline pilots. The format includes a definition glossary, an A.T.C. communications terms section, an aeronautical idiomatic expressions section, aeronautical opposite words section, and an aeronautical abbreviations section.

About the Author

J. Deborah Balter is unique to aviation. She is one of a small number of women involved with safety in aviation communications. Balter, who was partially educated in Europe, has a background in aviation and languages, has traveled and flown extensively and has taught English As A Second Language in the U.S. and Europe.

In 1977, Balter saw the necessity of improving communication skills of American and foreign pilots, controllers, aviation mechanics, maintenance personnel, and executives. She realized that pilots and controllers, in fact, everyone involved in aviation, from all countries, has to be able to converse fluently in the technical jargon of aviation in American English. American English is the worldwide standard language utilized in Aviation.

Because making the skies a safer place has been her unrelenting passion, she opened Aviation Language Schools Inc., (ALS), in 1977, in Miami Florida. Immediately, she realized that she had to write her own aviation training materials since none existed with emphasis on precise communication.

A small sampling of entities that have utilized Balter's Dictionary for training purposes are: the army, national guard and air force of the U.S., Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, Spain, Nepal; airlines such as Alitalia, Asiana, Aeroflot; corporations like Mitsbishi, Sikorsky and Boeing; flight schools, e.g. FlightSafety International, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and international organizations including the World Bank and ICAO, (International Civil Aviation Authority).
