About the Book

The plight of the elderly is a growing concern throughout Western society. In Dr. George H. Weber's new release Eldercare: A Clinical Primer for Volunteers, aspects of caregiving and volunteering with the elderly are discussed in a compassionate and practical manner.

Through various techniques, from affirmation and support to encouraging expression and active listening, Eldercare discusses how important it is for society to look after and respect this often neglected segment of society.

Dr. Carole Cox, Professor at Fordham University says Eldercare "fills a noticeable gap in the literature related to volunteering." With 40 case examples to study, volunteers and caregivers have many real-life experiences to draw on to employ in their own work.

About the Author

George H. Weber, Ph. D. is Professor Emeritus at the Catholic University of America and formerly Deputy Director of the Division of Special Mental Health Programs for the National Institute of Mental Health. He has served in the past as Executive Secretary to President Kennedy's Committee on Youth Employment; U. S. Children's Bureau consultant to Juvenile institutions; and as head of Minnesota's institutions for delinquents and youthful offenders.

Dr. Weber has edited, co-edited or written eight books on social science and social problems, including several on long-term care of the elderly. In addition, he has published over 50 professional articles and reviews. He holds a Ph. D. in sociology and was trained in psychology and psychoanalytical therapy. He has taught at a number of universities in addition to the Catholic University of America, Washington College of Law at American University, Georgetown University and the University of Minnesota.

His experience includes working with the elderly as a volunteer for several years. He lives in the Tampa, Florida area.
