About the Book

This is a How To book. It addresses preventative health care in international health projects. It is designed to assist those who work in the field on health care projects and is suitable for both national and international staff.

The contents demonstrate how all aspects of health are interrelated and how one can design effective programmes for the protection of vulnerable groups.

The book was originally planned to just cover the components of the monitoring programmes for the vulnerable groups. But it grew to include an overview of community health care, factors influencing health, information on the anatomy of a project, how to plan programmes, details on the provision of staff and community health education, as well as the full descriptions of the components of the monitoring programmes for the three most vulnerable groups (pregnant women, children 0-5years and the elderly and those with chronic disease.)

Included are many examples of events that illustrate points in the text, and a variety of notes and illustrations for health education. Also included are statistics gathering forms, an example of a prenatal chart and other items that I have found useful.

About the Author

Leona Cayzer was born and raised in New Zealand. After completing her nursing training at the Christchurch Hospital, she travelled to Canada. In 1986 she had her first international health experience with an integrated rural development project in Lesotho. On return to Canada she worked for the Medical Services Branch of Health and Welfare Canada (now known as First Nations and Inuit Health) in the isolated aboriginal communities in Northern Canada. As well as developing the necessary clinical skills, she learned of the organized and effective community preventative health care programmes.

Over the subsequent 22 years she has worked on a wide variety of health projects in nine African countries, the Russian Federation and North Korea. Between international assignments she has continued work in health care with the indigenous peoples of Canada and Australia.
