As the pain subsided, Colin glanced around and saw nothing but open water ahead of him. It was beautiful, the glass like reflection of the water with the sun making its morning ascent. He glanced backward to estimate how far he was from the beach. The quick glance was not enough. Colin rotated his torso counter clockwise to get a better view. What he saw startled him. He could see only a small portion of the beach but to his astonishment; it was not the area that he left. This fact alone was not his main concern. The distance he swam was much further than anticipated. He remembered his dad saying the barn was 100 yards from the front porch. It was difficult to know for certain, but Colin guessed he had swum at least seven or eight times that distance, maybe more. Unknown to Colin, an undercurrent had moved Colin about 200 yards to his right or the length of two football fields. His vision of the quiet beach was replaced with a steep cliff and no beach. Colin realized he would have to swim against a current on a diagonal if he wanted to make it back to his original position. Waiting any longer would not help his situation. With his calf muscle still cramping, Colin focused on a point near the beach and began swimming again. The thought caught him off guard but it came as clear as the sky was blue that day, ‘what if I don’t make it back.’

About the Book
Following the untimely death of his father and a move to an unfamiliar city, fourteen-year-old Colin Madix takes a morning swim that ends in disaster. Colin gets turned around at sea. His strength fails him, and suddenly, Colin is drowning. He awakens later, following a near-death experience that alters his belief system and changes his young life.

Mark Kevesdy received his master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Baldwin Wallace College and co-authored Creating Dynamic Teaching Teams in Schools. He has been an elementary and middle school teacher for eighteen years. He currently lives in Ohio with his wife, Kim, and their five children.
