On this particular Sunday, the shopping list was extra long, and there were many items to load into the cart. As Charlotte was helping her mom push the very full and very heavy cart toward the checkout lane, she noticed her friend Olivia from school in the next aisle. Charlotte was happy to see Olivia, and she began to wave to her over the tall shopping cart.
Just as Charlotte lifted her arm to wave, something happened. She accidentally knocked over a bag of apples that was perched on top of the cart. Uh-oh, thought Charlotte, and she gasped as the apples went flying off the cart and down the aisles. Apples were everywhere!
Charlotte felt her cheeks getting red and her eyes welling up with tears. She turned to her mom to apologize, and just then she noticed Olivia laughing and pointing at the apples on the floor. Olivia smirked, “I can’t believe you dropped all those apples—you are such a klutz!” Charlotte’s heart sank to the floor—she felt absolutely terrible.

About the Book
The Upstander Superheroes are a group of young superheroes who magically appear to save the day when they see children being unkind to one another. In this story, the Upstander Superheroes see Olivia being unkind to her friend Charlotte. They quickly arrive to stand up for Charlotte and to teach both girls a lesson about compassion and thoughtfulness. Standing up, instead of just standing by, is what makes someone an upstander.
About the Author
Elissa Ciment graduated from Barnard College and then received an MPH, specializing in epidemiology and biostatistics, from the Boston University School of Public Health. Her work has appeared in various epidemiological publications, as well as in Sportswear International, a global fashion magazine. Elissa lives in South Floridam where she is a busy wife, mom, and volunteer advocate for child literacy. Reena Rabovsky received her MSEd in school psychology from Queens College in New York. As a school psychologist, her goal is to facilitate students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth. She especially enjoys collaborating with students, parents, community members, and school staff to create a positive learning environment. Reena is delighted to support the social and emotional learning at RASG Hebrew Academy in Miami Beach, Florida, where she works as the school psychologist. She loves spending time with her husband and three children.
