A Bad Case of the Grownies

“But I want to be grown now, Mommy. I can tie my own shoes.” It was true. Samantha could tie her own shoes. And she could clean up her own room and put her clothes in the hamper, and she could even get on and off the school bus all by herself. Samantha felt like she was grown now. And she wanted to show her mommy just how much. On Sunday, Samantha wanted a piece of her leftover birthday cake. “Mommy, can I have a piece of cake, please?” “Yes, Samantha,” her mother replied. “Please wait until I get it for you.” Samantha knew this was her chance to show her mommy that she could do a grown-up thing all by herself. So Samantha slid the big brown chair all the way up to the small round table in the kitchen. Samantha took the top off the cake dish. Then Samantha got the knife off the table and tried to cut her own cake. “Ouch! Mommy, help me!” “What happened, Samantha?” “The knife cut me.” Samantha’s mother smiled. “Oh, I see. I think someone has a bad case of the grownies.” Samantha’s mother took her to the bathroom and cleaned her cut. She gave Samantha a big kiss and a small Band-Aid.
