About the Author

Benn Sowerby ( 1905 - 1988 ) was born in Broadclyst, Devon and educated at Tonbridge and Pembroke College, Cambridge. He and his friend John Cooper founded the publishing houses the Hesperides Press and the Pilot Press in 2, Little Essex Street, London. He and his wife Kay, whom he had married in 1930, spent three years travelling around the world from 1934 - 1937 after which they settled in Jamaica, where their only child, Richard, was born in 1945. In 1950 they left Jamaica to live in Jersey where they both taught at St. Michael's School from 1959 to 1963.
