Some crabby officer shouted out, "Hand those papers to me!" He muttered that if we had good eyesight and were in good health, we'd be Marines. Otherwise, we'd go into the Navy. He stamped my papers USMC. I was ignorant and didn't know what that meant. I thought that I'd made lieutenant or something. But, I looked around and all the other boys had their papers stamped USMC also, and I knew there was no promotion. I didn't even know what a Marine was. I told a corpsman, "I wanted to go into the Navy." He said, "Well, you're in the Navy. The infantry Navy!"
