Philip Charleston, a former devout Catholic, uses a pen name because he doesn't want any wacko fundamentalists, incensed by Shattering's message, to assault him, his family, his house, or his car or flood his post box or email in-box with death threats and other nasty messages. The other reason, equally practical, is that revealing his true name would place him and his employer in awkward professional positions.
