About the Book

Dr. Harry Carter has taken the time to lay out some serious examples of things that people in leadership positions will be forced to face at one time or another. He is well-known in the fire service for his ability to look into the future, take on the critics and advocate the unpopular opinion. In his book he has taken the time to share a great many of the experiences which shaped his approach to leadership.

Dr. Carter is fond of using self-deprecating humor to make his points about the many quandaries facing people who step forward to assume leadership roles in their fire departments. However, his life lessons have a universal applicability to anyone, anywhere who finds themselves in a leadership role. He wants you, the reader, to remember that this book is about great leadership-he has witnessed it, read about it and practiced it. He has made a great many mistakes, but would like to think of those as being good experience. He is baring his soul to you in a way not often seen in books of this type. Hopefully you will find some help in the pages that follow.

About the Author

Harry R. Carter Ph.D, CFO, MIFireE is a veteran of more than 40 years in the American Fire Service. He is a Firehouse Contributing Editor. A municipal fire protection consultant based in Adelphia, New Jersey, he is the former President of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors and a Life Member of the National Fire Protection Association. He is Past Chief and Active Life Member of the Adelphia Fire Company, Howell Township, New Jersey. Currently the Chairman of the Board of Fire Commissioners for the Howell township District #2, he retired from the Newark, NJ Fire Department in 1999 as a Battalion Commander. He also served as chief of training and Commander of the Hazardous Materials Response Team.
