Sometimes you can’t begin a new adventure until you complete and wrap up your current adventure. You can’t ride the next horse until you get off of the one you are riding now. You can’t try out the new bow for shooting arrows unless you put down the old bow you are holding. Life is like that. Simon knew that he was being summoned to a purpose that was more than fishing for fish or forming pottery. He had to share Jesus with those who could appreciate the experience. He had to fish for people who could let themselves become caught in the net of his enthusiasm about directly connecting to What Is. He had to form lives who could make a difference in the world. He could make the blind see that they didn’t need any of the written words of old to read the face of the day at hand and how God is working as we speak. He could make the lame understand that they didn’t need to get into some secret room or exclusive initiation into some forbidden mystery to get to the Answer. They could reach the Answer from wherever they happened to be and with whatever tools that they had in hand. They could pick up a rock and it was holy. They could turn over a fallen tree branch and it was sacred. The deaf can now hear because nothing is whispered about What Is. It is shouted from the rooftops when the flock of birds take off into the sky. The rocks shout it out. The flowers growing on the side of the road sing its song. Simon had to wake up, shake up, the living dead of the world. They have been so conditioned, so frozen in their lack of expectations for something real, something direct and personal, something sacred in their mundane lives. They are not poor, they are rich. Jesus is all around them, at their beckon call. There is no tithe to pay, no ritual of initiation, no secret handshake entrance into some great mystery. Life is the mystery and your membership card is your belly button.
