Karla was born blind and lived in Mexico. Her family loved her very much and wanted her to lead a full life. In order for Karla to go to a special school she had to go to school in the United States. Her parents had to adopt her out to an American family in order to obtain entrance to this school. Karla couldn't hear the walls on rainey days in Tuscon, Arizona where the school was located. She counted on hearing a sonic reponse from the walls in order to know where a new corridor was coming in to the hallway where she was walking. The walls let her know when she could turn into another hallway. Karla wanted to become a video or film editor because her hearing was so keen. She graduated from High School, and went to college. The College didn't think she could manage the skills she needed but she proved that she could. What Karla found out was that there were no walls, no walls to impede her direction in life.

About the Book
" I Can't Hear The Walls" This book attempts to bring to light the beauty in the diversity of all human beings as we struggle to survive, cope and realize our dreams. The dreams in this book are those of people with varying types of disabilities and what they dream about. The book takes us into those dreams and then, interactive with the reader who goes past the center page, it exposes the reader to the moments involved in the dreams coming true. It is hoped that through acceptance and understanding that this book will demonstrate to all of us creatures who live disabiling lives, that there are no walls - nothing to shatter our hopes as long, as we dream.
About the Author
Marilyn Maple, Ph.D. is retired from the University of Florida where for 30 years she produced educational media for six medically related colleges. Her first children's book, "On The Wings of a Butterfly", was written at the request of terminally ill children who wanted to know about dying. This book is in its second printing and has found a home in Hospices and Aids Clinics. The book is published by Parenting Press, Seatle Washington. Her second children's book "The Refuge" was written about a retirement village for wild animals. In this book she addresses the problems of the animals, all of whom demonstrate human disabilities or problems, such as a lion who has a cleft palate and lisps when he roars, a Bengal tiger who suffers depression because his sister died, and an albino skunk who was not acceptable to his family because he was white and different. This book was published by Trafford Publishing.
