About the Book

Egypt has all the elements to captivate the traveller and animate the writer. It is an antique land stretched along one of the great rivers of the world that runs through a trackless desert, littered with the remains of a great civilization. There is enormous contrast between the green and still agricultural Nile valley, the empty desert wastelands and Cairo, one of the world’s greatest and most densely populated cities.

Egypt has been visited, marvelled at and written about by innumerable authors, artists, archaeologists, soldiers and diplomats from Herodotus to Gustave Flaubert and Paul William Roberts.

This animated account is based on journals and photographs by the author of two journeys to the land of the Pharaohs.

About the Author

Richard Brownlee was born and grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada where he trained as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon. Broadening his surgical horizons, Richard lived and worked in Zurich, Stockholm and London. Arriving home in Canada, he went to Victoria to start a cardiac surgery program at the Royal Jubilee Hospital and has made his home there since. An irrepressible traveller, Richard has taken pictures and written journals whenever possible through Europe, South America and China. He fell in love with Egypt early in life and finally got to go there, first with a close friend and later with his two sons, reliving some of the experiences of nineteenth century travel writers on the Nile.
