About the Book

Jane Husted eagerly accepts a job as a show-rider and trainer at the luxurious Springhill Estate of Real Estate Developer Elliot Whitbeck in the suburbs south of Boston. Springhill is devoted to the breeding of Trakehners and the art of Dressage, and Jane looks forward to stepping out of her hardscrabble life on public assistance and into the rarified milieu of bluebloods--horses and people. She does not expect a quagmire of suspense, murder and psychotic terror. Stepping into the fast lane brings many jolting surprises; among them Brian Canaday, son of the powerful head of Canaday International and a specter of her poverty-ridden childhood. Jane struggles to disguise her appearance, re-invent her background and duck the man at every turn lest she jog old memories; memories that would be great fodder for the back-stabbing elite of Springhill. As she experiences success in the show ring, her emerging "sixth-sense" begins to detect the presence of an invisible adversary; an enemy who has more on the mind that just beating Jane in the show ring. The estate's enormous, four-wing, multi-level barn becomes a deadly mine field as the cunning predator seeks to terrorize and destroy her, becoming bolder with each new "accident". When the situation threatens to overwhelm Jane, she is assisted by her long time friend Madeline Fanning, a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist on staff at a large Boston hospital. Madeline tells Jane that in her professional opinion the shadowy predator is a full blown criminal psychopath, and urges her to pay more attention to her extra-sensory perception and use it as a tool to fight her enemy.

When a class four hurricane plows up the eastern seaboard just in time for the annual indoor Dressage show, it plays nicely into the hands of her shadowy enemy. Every big-wig associated with the Whitbecks and Canadays, including Brian himself, the Governor and show business friends, will be in attendance. Jane?s ambition and chance at real success forces her into the spotlight and further exposes her to the machinations of a would-be killer. It will take the combined efforts of all her friends to rescue Jane from the final and most deadly trap set for her, just as the hurricane plows full-force into New England.

About the Author

Ann Self grew up in New England around horses, dogs and big old spooky barns; the perfect background for a mystery writer. An avid lifelong fan of Dressage and a participant of the first NEDA learner judges program, she now writes about the vivid experiences of the horseshow world - some real, some slightly real, and some slightly supernatural.

Delve into the worlds of Jane Husted, Dylan Ripley, Sam Noone, Reggie O'Malley, Brian Canaday, Doctor Madeline Fanning, Detective Westerlund and the outrageously rich Whitbeck family - Lucinda, Cecily and Elliot - in a colorful dichotomy of the super-rich and the embarrassingly poor. Pretty much sums up the horseshow scene. Don't miss the sequel: SOMETHING VERY GHOSTLY.
