About the Book
If a harsher regime than the Magdaline laundries existed, it was the Industrial schools run by the Christian Brothers. The savage beatings suffered by young defenceless boys at their hands still causes grown men to have nightmares.
About the Author
It is now over fifty years since I left St Joseph's Industrial School in Galway. I was one of the fortunate ones who had the support of a good family and a trade. Without those assets I would have been ill prepared to face out into the great world. I cannot help wondering about those who were less blessed than myself , who had no trade , no education to speak of, or no family . As an avid reader I have looked in vain for a book on the subject, but up to now there has been nothing written about the brutality that went on in St Joseph's, all in the name of religion. My family have urged me for years to put my story in print, so in my seventy- first year , I have decided to do so. If I don't it may never become known. I can only speak for myself , but it has left a mark on me that time has done little to erase. I shudder to think of the fate of those less fortunate boys who also suffered at the hands of the brutal Christian Brothers. Pray God it will never happen again.
