About the Book

This biography of General Lee begins with his early ancestors in Ireland and Scotland and their migration to America. It traces his boyhood of poverty and his adventures on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. It recounts how he became educated to be admitted to West Point and his military career thereafter. He gained combat experience in the Mexican War.

Religious faith and the Shennandoah Valley were the dominate influences of his life.

About the Author

William Wallace Means is the great-grandson of Civil War veteran Wallace William Brewer of the Pennsylvania Bucktail Regiment.

Born in Sandy Lake, PA, Means graduated from Patton School for Boys at Elizabethtown, PA and enlisted in the U.S Army Air Force. Assigned to the Ninth Air Corps, he served as a crew chief in occupied Germany in 1945. He is a graduate of Kutztown University and Temple University, Philidelphia, with a Master's degree in Education. He served thirty-two years in Pennsylvania schools and is now retired.
