About the Book
The Independent Spirit and its Enemies sets out to identify the traps and loopholes inside and outside that make rational thinking an obstacle race even for the most gifted. Some of these problems may have occurred to you, others may be quite a surprise and could even be found upsetting by some.
For illustration the book refers every so often to The Closing of the American Mind, by Allan Bloom, and the novel by Saul Bellow about its author, Ravelstein. It is not necessary to have read these to understand the examples.
The result is a new look at the misconceptions that underlie even our most basic assumptions about the most important aspects of our lives and loves.
