About the Book

Petey and Lee Martin live normally unexciting but fullfiling lives. Petey is a Ship Captain, Lee a City Planner. Both have careers that they enjoy, for the most part, and which appear to be going in the "right" direction.

Over a dinner meant to celebrate her marriage, a very good friend collapses and later dies of a reaction to Monosodium Glutimate (MSG) in a time and place where the substance should not have been. It looks very much like her new husband placed it in her food while she was out of the room with the intention of collecting a very large insurance policy.

The novel is a combination of murder mystery, comment on alternative life styles and comment on friendship and love, set in Vancouver, B.C. in the late 1980's.

About the Author

Joseph D. ("Joe") Oliver was born in Phoenix Arizona, U.S.A. and was educated partially in the U.S. and partially in Canada. He holds a doctorate of Philosophy in Anthropology and has taught in Canada, the U.S., Costa Rica and on Guam. He also held Ship Master ("Captain's") Certification from both the U.S. and Canada including one of the very few licences for large sailing vessels. He and his co-author (and wife) met at a faculty meeting at the University of Guam.

Nancy E. Oliver was born in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. and educated in California. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in History and was Vancouver B.C.'s first Heritage Planner. She held Master's Certification for small passenger vessels from Canada and the U.S..

They moved to B.C in 1972 after deciding that Ontario winters were no longer tolerable. They have lived in a number of places on the Coast ranging from Victoria to Port Edward. They have been awarded various odd pieces of metal hanging off brightly coloured ribbons they can wear if they choose to do so. The senior of these is Nancy's Canada 125 Medal, awarded in 1992 for her work in Heritage Conservation.

They both have very broad backgrounds which include military service, teaching grade three in a small Spanish speaking community, writing a textbook for ESL in Costa Rica, editing and publishing magazines and teaching sailing and navigation. Joe is the only person he knows with both paddle wheeler and large sailing vessel time.

Joe has been writing for publication since high school, mostly technical articles and training manuals. Nancy got a little later start.
