Surrogate mothers are often engaged by men and women who suffer from physical conditions that prevent them from having offspring in the normal manner. The medical technique of assisted reproductive technology enables many of these individuals to have their own biological child or children. In vitro fertilization is the most common of several methods used in this landmark advance which was first demonstrated in England over twenty years ago. Since that initial success, thousands of men and women throughout the world have benefited from the amazing innovation.

In vitro fertilization consists of retrieving mature eggs from a healthy female, fertilizing them with sperm in a Petri dish, and implanting the fertilized eggs two days later in the recipient's uterus.

In hospitals and clinics stringent procedures are employed and followed rigorously to prevent the possibility of error in the process of IVF but systems of this nature are not guaranteed to be 100% fail-safe.
