About the Book
Two families living in Washington DC during the 1940's: one family struggling with the tragic deaths of their two sons; the other with an alcoholic husband. Eve and Joe Washington's search to understand their tragedies takes them to Beaufort, South Carolina - Eve's ancestral home - where their Christian beliefs are tested by voodoo and black magic.
Oral slave history tells of a curse laced on Eve's family during slavery by one the house slaves: Heck resented Eve's great-grandmother for running the slave owner's manor house with an iron fist. Is this curse real, or just nonsense? This question haunts Joe and Eve, driving them to make choices with dire and far-reaching consequences.
