About the Author
At the age of 63, Bob Hartley, decided to go after his lifetime dream of hiking the 2160-mile Appalachian Trail. As a civil engineer, he had completed a 29-year career with the New York State Department of Transportation. With his wife Marise, he had raised two wonderful children and now it was time to experience the granddaddy of all trails, the A.T. Bob's hiking background includes not only the AT but also The Long Trail in Vermont, The Chillkoot Trail in Alaska, and extensive hiking in New York's Catskill and Adirondack Mountains. He has been a member of The Appalachian Trail Conference, The New York- New Jersey Trail Conference, The Green Mountain Club, The Appalachian Mountain Club, and The Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association. In an attempt to give something back to the Trail, he has volunteered hundreds of hours helping to rebuild isolated sections of the AT in Maine.
As this book goes to print, the author is planning an adventure of a different type. This time the mode of travel will be by ship rather than foot. Watch for a new book by Bob Hartley with the title AROUND THE WORLD BY FREIGHTER.
