About the Book

Respect & Leadership in dog training is about the fundamental issues concerning a dog's need to have a handler who is a respected leader. It looks at the problems encountered in training if a handler does not adopt this role and aims to help handlers, who are training or wish to train a gundog, as well as providing a useful guide to instructors trying to help handlers and dogs. The related articles included, deal with some common problems and some guidance on how these may be avoided or overcome. The related articles are specifically concerning: types of temperament; submissive behaviour; heelwork; retrieving; water work and working two dogs together. The focus is on training dogs to work in the shooting field but many issues covered should also help anyone wishing to form a better relationship with a dog as well as those who aspire to competitive events such as Gundog working tests and Field Trials. This is not, in general, a step-by-step training manual for those just beginning but designed for those who already have a little knowledge of the mechanics involved in training dogs concerning the basics or foundations.
