About the Book

Life is certainly full of a great many decisions, and it took me over fifty years to realize that having been assigned to a place called Cape Decision, which had gained its name as the point where only the best prepared and most intrepid seamen continued into the wilder and uncharted waters, while the less well-equipped opted to remain in the more protected environment of Chatham Strait; likely had a profound effect on my lifelong decision-making process.

Because of a difference of opinion with the skipper of a U.S.C.G. cutter about the wearing of life jackets in waters where concerns about hypothermia were of immediate concern; told the Commander "it makes no difference to me whether I die of drowning or freezing, my plan is to stay dry and alive so I guess you'll have to run your ship and I'll have to run my boat" as I left the bridge and reentered my 19-foot dory and rowed back to the lighthouse.
