There's Rock

About the Book

Most of this book is fiction. The beginning of the story and buying the cabin at Star Point Village is true. While looking at the many lots at this land project, I found a large rock that resembled an anvil and from this I based by story. My grandfather was married twice and he fought in the Civil War. He also had an encounter with Jesse James. My World War II record was true, including the purchase of the cabin at Star Point Village.

About the Author

Lawrence Helton was born in Harlan County, Kentucky on September 11, 1913. His father, Hiram H. Helton, was a coal miner and farmer. Lawrence was from a large family of nine boys and one girl and life was hard, especially during the depression of 1929-1934. He worked summer months during high school for a coal company on the tipple and after graduating from high school, a year for the same company in their commissary. The author was also an automobile salesman for four years and later a student in a trade school (radio and electronics). Following this school, the author was employed by Cival Service for four years during World War II working with the Army Air Force as crew chief installing and maintaining airport control equipment on army air bases in seven western states.

After World War II, the author was with a large life insurance company as an agent and staff manager for thirty years. He and his wife have been married for 69 years and have one daughter and two grandchildren.

"I love to write poetry and short novels," says the author. "Most of my writings have been done since my retirement and all are stored in my computer. I am a member of the Masonic lodge, the Scottish Rite and Shrine, a member of the Baptist Church, a Rotarian and a member of Corbin Planning and Zoning Commission."

Lawrence Helton and his wife, Edith, continue to reside in their native Kentucky.
