Clancy McDare knows she is a good writer. When her mentor, Eric Sobel, dies, she seems unable to accomplish anything. When she is taken to the cleaners by a nefarious husband, she sinks even lower. Her next efforts flop, leaving many critics to assign Sobel the credit for her best seller. While studying at his Island house, the crème-de-la-crème of society label her as his mistress.

She struggles to produce another book worthy of Sobel's approval, even after he is long dead. Others try to convince her to let go of her fixation with the dead mentor, but she only sees him through biased eyes.

It is not until she meets Nick Cretos that she feels inspired. When he asks for her help she sees his Island home and learns that he is more than just a handsome face. Equally fascinated with a woman he thought was only for show, he wonders what makes her tick. When he discovers she is camping out at Sobel's abandoned Island house, he realizes she is still under the spell of the master manipulator.

Determined to free her of self-doubt and expose Eric Sobel for the mental monster he was, Nick decides to gradually undo the damage. Like the chess games he played against Eric, he hopes to slowly and logically lead her into awareness.

Unfortunately, a massive hurricane and thieves using it for cover intervene and Nick must do something he hates. He must make Clancy angry, livid in fact, to save her life. He must risk her hating him by telling her point blank about the monster she thought of as a God. Knowing that she would move heaven and earth to prove him wrong, Nick sets her on the path that unmasks Sobel, the man, and sets her free.
