About the Book

After the death of her husband, Annie York embarks on a summer journey to her grandmother's birthplace on Prince Edward Island in Canada. A small cottage nestled in the dunes overlooking a red sand beach bcomes a sanctuary where Annie is free to release her grief, fears and anger. As her strength and courage return, she ventures onto the beach where she meets Millie, a resilient nine-year-old girl, and Casey, an American film actor, both struggling with demons of their own. Through mishaps and crises these three strangers discover the trust and promise of a lasting friendship. The Island, set apart from the world each has left behind, offers the perfect setting for a love triange that works.

Over the next few weeks, Annie, Millie and Casey are welcomed into a coastal community steeped in folklore and the traditions of the past, as well as humorous and adventurous summer activities. Preparations for an annual family reunion take on the appearance and good fun of an old-fashioned barn raising, a bicycle built for two becomes a vehicle of friendship, and walks along the beach become journeys of discovery and daydreams.

As she is embraced by the beauty of the Island and the generosity of its people , Annie's reflective journal entries and first person narratives chronical the re-awakening of her passion and courage. She reaches out to a child in trouble, and in doing so faces the demons of her past. As her world view turns outward, Annie finds love and subsequently the peace that has eluded her throughout life.
